Making her first stakes start at a mile and a half since last November, Cheyenne Stables' Mystical Star came home a gallant third in the $100,000 Waya S. Aug. 5 at Saratoga. It was also the first time the 5-year-old mare had started in a stake at the historic upstate New York track.
As is the case often in turf marathon events, the field was fairly well packed and moved at a sensible pace for the first mile, with Mystical Star on the outside in third before moving up to challenge pacesetter Team on the final of three turn. She came down the lane with good energy under Jose Lezcano to be third, beaten less than three lengths by the winner Qushchi.
Winner of the Grade 2 New York H. in 2012, Mystical Star has now finished in the top three in nine of her 16 career starts, earning $427,132. She also has placed in the Grade 1 Spinster and Grade 3 Long Island H. in 2012 and the Grade 3 Hillsborough S. earlier this year.
