Mystical Star second in G1 Spinster

Thursday, October 11, 2012

Cheyenne Stables' Mystical Star put in a game stretch run to be second in the $500,000 Spinster Oct. 7 at Keeneland. She was already a Grade 2 winner having won the New York S. on the turf at Belmont Park in June.

Trained by Christophe Clemente, Mystical Star came into the Spinster with a pair of allowance wins at Keeneland. The bay daughter of Empire Maker was stuck four wide while in fifth for the first six furlongs, then began to move steadily forward on the turn while still well off the rail. She had a brief lead in mid-stretch, and though she couldn't hold off In Lingerie for the win, she was 2 1/4-lengths clear of third place finisher Upperline.

“My filly ran real good,” said rider Jose Lezcano. “The position was good. She broke running. She was comfortable the whole way. When I let her make the move, she kicked very well. I think my filly ran a good race.”

Mystical Star is now 4-2-0 in 10 starts, with earnings of $355,132.
